HH Relief Update—10/12/2024

--Zeke Vanderpool, MPMC Relief Effort Coordinator

Today we made our third supply run into the hurricane-battered region of western North Carolina. We returned to Marshall, and delivered over three vehicle loads of much needed supplies:

  • Thanks to dear friends in Alabama, we were able to provide a large load of medical re-supply items for the Marshall Fire Dept. Their fire station, gear, and supplies were wiped out in the flood.

Also on this trip we delivered:

  • Hygiene and cleaning supplies

  • Washing detergent

  • Heater and fuel

  • Blankets

  • Baby formula

  • Canned food

  • Hydration drinks

  • Cots

  • Pillows

  • Warm food for the volunteers

Just as importantly, we spent time with the people on the front lines with Marshall FD. We listened to their challenges and frustrations and shed tears together over their loss and pain. We celebrated their incredible bravery and resilience, and we talked about the challenges still to come—some of which may prove the be the greatest challenges yet. We learned that some of the areas that these people are supporting may not have power for months. That means an incredibly hard winter for those communities in that region. The mountain winters are harsh enough as it is. To endure this without power to cook and stay warm is almost unimaginable. Donations and support in the area are already starting to fall away. Our goal is to continue to identify the specific needs and fill the gaps.

I am truly thankful for the giving spirit and selfless dedication that surrounds this effort through the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. We may be a small country church, but our impact in this crisis has been huge. The amazing people who have donated money and prayers have truly kept us up and running. God put us in the right place at the right time and continues to show us that faith and action without hesitation will achieve incredible results in His name.

Now it’s time to start preparing for our next run. Keeping the faith and thankful for each opportunity!
